Film: Fastantic Beast : Secrets of Dumbledore (2022)

Fantastic Beast : Secrets of Dumbledore

In Kweilin, China, 1932, Newt Scamander helps a Qilin — a magical creature that can see into one's soul as well as the future — give birth. Gellert Grindelwald's acolytes, led by Credence Barebone, attack and kill the mother and kidnap the newborn. Grindelwald subsequently kills the creature to harness its ability of precognition. However, unbeknownst to them, the Qilin had twins, the younger of which Newt saves.

Unable to battle Grindelwald due to their blood pact, Albus Dumbledore recruits Newt, his brother Theseus, Ilvermorny Charms teacher Lally Hicks, Senegalese-French wizard Yusuf Kama, American No-Maj Jacob Kowalski and Newt's assistant Bunty Broadacre to thwart Grindelwald's plan for world domination. Yusuf Kama is tagged to be a spy in Grindelwald's inner circle while the others are sent to Berlin, Germany. Once there, the group witness Grindelwald being acquitted of all criminal charges by the International Confederation of Wizards (ICW) and subsequently running for the office of Supreme Mugwump. Newt had passed Albus' message to Anton Vogel, current Supreme Mugwump, to do the right thing, not the easy thing. Anton Vogel tells the council of the ICW that he believes arresting Grindelwald could gain him more support, but his being defeated in a legitimate election will erode his strength. Albus later remarks to Newt that Vogel had chosen the easy thing.

Grindelwald's acolytes, who have undermined the German Ministry of Magic, arrest Theseus and plot to assassinate the Brazilian Supreme Mugwump candidate, Vicência Santos. Dumbledore assigns Newt to rescue Theseus, and Lally, with Jacob, to foil the assassination. While Newt rescues his brother from the secret German wizarding prison, Lally and Jacob thwart the assassination attempt; however, Jacob is subsequently framed for attempting to kill Grindelwald, and he and Lally barely escape, giving Grindelwald a reason to turn the Wizarding world against all Muggles. Meanwhile, Grindelwald has sent Credence to assassinate Dumbledore. Dumbledore quickly defeats Credence, who is revealed to be the illegitimate son of Dumbledore's younger brother, Aberforth Dumbledore. Learning who his father is and being spared by Albus, Credence starts to question his loyalty to Grindelwald.

Wizarding world leaders gather in Bhutan to elect the new Supreme Mugwump by the ancient tradition of being found worthy by a Qilin, who bows to those pure of heart. Being able to see the future, Grindelwald knows that Albus and Newt will bring the twin Qilin to the ceremony. He stations his followers in the Bhutan village to intercept Albus' team. Albus knows this, so five suitcases are prepared to confuse him and the members of the team go separately to the village.

Grindelwald uses necromancy to reanimate the Qilin he killed earlier. He brings it to the village and during the Walk of the Qilin ceremony has it bow to him, thus manipulating the election. He immediately declares war on all Muggles and tortures Jacob for trying to assassinate him; however, Credence, Newt and Queenie Goldstein, who had joined and then renounced Grindelwald, expose him. Bunty produces the surviving Qilin, which subsequently bows to Dumbledore. He declines the position and Santos is instead chosen as new Supreme Mugwump. Enraged, Grindelwald tries to kill Credence, who is protected by Albus and Aberforth. Dumbledore's and Grindelwald's clashing spells break the blood pact that prevented them from attacking one another. The ensuing battle between the two reaches a stalemate, and Grindelwald disapparates.

In the aftermath, Aberforth accepts the dying Credence and takes him home. Jacob and Queenie marry in the former's New York City bakery, with most of the group and Tina Goldstein in attendance. Dumbledore watches the ceremony from afar. Before it happens Newt spots him seated on the bench across the street and goes out to speak with him. Albus thanks Newt, watches a bit more, then departs alone into the night.
